Abstract:

The Peripheral Facial Palsy (PFP) is related to different etiologies, and there are different therapeutic ways to minimize the sequels. The indication of surgical treatment depends mainly on the etiology and on the clinical evaluation of PFP. The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical evaluation of PFP considering the surgical treatment of 19 patients treated on Hospital Santa Marcelina between 1995 and 1998.The protocol of the study included anamnesis, physical and biochemical exams, electric and audiometric tests looking for the etiology of the PFP. Another tests were performed trying to find the topographic diagnosis, such as CT scan, impedanciometry and Schimmer test. The grade of the palsy was determined both by House-Brackman and Portmman classification. The surgical approach depended on the topography of the lesion and on the audiometric findings. After surgery, 83,3% of the patients had good outcome. The patients who had gun-shot palsy had the worst results, presenting sequels like sinkinesias.
